Illuminating Science Through Story

I was an avid reader as a child, especially of mysteries.  As an eighth grader my mother thought she might keep me busy for a  while with a Christmas gift of The Complete Sherlock Holmes.  Her reprieve  from driving me to the library lasted a week.

With age I came to appreciate another genre that involves solving mysteries:  the history of science is filled with thrilling discoveries, the “aha” moments when the truth surfaces, the solution becomes clear, and the elegance of nature reveals itself.

I’ve had extensive opportunities to explain science.  As a pediatrician I spent hours  at the bedside of sick children talking to parents who needed to know why their child had wound up in the hospital and what was going to happen next.  I then switched to public health after a two-year stint at CDC’s disease detective school. In my career as an infectious disease epidemiologist, I have explained the science behind the spread and prevention of communicable diseases to audiences of doctors and researchers, legislators, community advocates, the general public, and the press. In both settings, I had to figure out how to get my point across. Getting things things right was also important.

While health and medicine are obvious topics for me, my life-long love of the outdoors has also fueled my passion for writing about nature.  And, in fact, the health of the planet has much to do with our own health.
